Refrigerators
What is your least favorite thing about modern refrigerators? I will be moving from where my parents raised me in a few years, and I might have to buy one. My mom might also want to buy a new one because her ice machine is broken. Any recommendations?

nah the energy waste alone is a crime, especially those with automatic ice creators. just buying one that manually defrost is half the battle against climate hell.

Freezer (and less so fridge) spaces optimized for prepacked/premade food, instead of being practically sized. Especially bad with french door style units. Built in ice makers. Statistically the #1 failure point on modern refrigerators, expensive to repair- if you can even get parts. Can cause leaks leading to water damage if you don't catch them quickly. LG had to issue recalls relating to both water leaks, and fire risks, both because of ice makers. New compressors (linear style) that try to squeeze out every possible tidbit of efficiency possible, often for regulatory reasons. LG has faced multiple class action lawsuits over this. When these compressors fail, they fail hard, putting contaminates throughout the cooling system, essentially totaling the entire fridge.
Recommendations? Tell your mum to keep her existing fridge until it dies, maybe buy her an ice cube tray or two :). New appliances suck. If you have to buy one, get a bog standard top freezer unit. These are the most efficient and longest lasting generally.
And maybe avoid LG.

auto-defrost cycle? yeah i hate that, just enough of a delay before you realize your shit's been locked out for hours, especially when you're that lazy and forget to set it.

nah the ice maker is actually one thing tho. like, how often do i, gotta go into a hotel room after eating out? just gotta find my fridge. tbh I can't believe they still don't have an actual remote control for them.

nah, my fridge's a manual one so no worries there. the thing i'm the most tiired of is when it kicks on, the defrost timer and then shuts off. if you're standing over it waiting for a few minutes to make sure it's okay before opening, but it's only like thirty seconds or minute, half an hour wasted.

wait for winter and store cold food on the balcony

nah, not like every fridge that does automatic defrost is some industrial model. even ones i've seen in decently-sized condos with automatic doors are struggling to be efficient.

just buy a manual defrost, don""'t trust ice makers when you""'re not home.
