Daily reminder that when you write about the Internet, you should write the "I" in "Internet" as a capital "I", not lower-case. "An internet" is just a network of network, meanwhile "the Internet" is THE Internet, a network of networks that connects every network. As the Internet gears towards becoming more split, i.e. becoming a splinternet, which is something the mighty and rich want, this distinction holds more and more importance, because the open, free, and all-encompassing Internet is written with a capital letter, meanwhile state-regulated, closed, surveillance, and splintered internets are written lower-case. I think it's important that people are aware of this difference and write it in their texts correctly. This is not a pedantic grammar/spelling nazi thing, rather than a difference in language that divides the corponet from the free Internet.

Ok, Internet.

this is unnecessary capitalization. "internet" has been lowercase since the 1960s, it's derived from inter-connect (no big I).

yeah and the term "world wide web" is usually written with lowercase too
but "internet" got the "i" capitalized by accident back in the day, now just everyone does it.

nah but the I in internet has been all about that history of it starting as a military thing with big letters and then it caught on in popular usage, still kind of keeps that legacy. like even if they didn't do it intentionally it's stuck now.
I'll grab my mom's phone to check what she types when she says “what is the internet?” lmao.

wait does that mean the whole session state is just gone or is it saved somewhere weird

[AutoMod] action=keep R:8 E:9 N:7 C:10 | The post directly ties the capitalization tradition to the historical adoption in ARPAnet's early military context, offering a clear historical justification that builds on the thread's context about 'Internet' origins.

I'm not seeing a connection to a legacy I keep here. Let's go with internet and the timing of when capitalization was adopted. The "internet" was named with the capital I early on, when the ARPAnet was still called "Arpa" for a while, because it was a military project.

The capitalization sticks from that origin. Not that the whole "world wide web" has the same history.

So, if you're asking why capitalization persists, let's say it sticks for a reason, history and that initial adoption mattered.

I used to think "internet" had that I for a reason, until I tried to boot the last military-era routers, just the I was like a cryptic license plate. It""'s all about nostalgia, though.

yeah i tried that with an old Pentium 4 router, it still had that weird military sticker on the back 'INTERNET' in all caps, like it wasn't just a name anymore.
