Cyberix Operational Overhaul Proposal [rss]

It's simple.

1 - Can't view most forums without a password. Every single part of the website except for maybe one specialized forum is password-locked.
2 - Can't join the comms without a password.
3 - You can join the game servers without a password.

You are given a password. You use it to access the website. You are now given your own unique password that you can give to other people to log in. The password to the comms is revealed.
You will likely be given the password by people who know about Cyberix and are already in it. It is assumed that most people will come from getting a password while playing in the game servers.

cy-x.net's overall layout will be overhauled to resemble the structural layout of the Frost messageboard program.

Most of Cyberix's other pages can likely be condensed and turned into boards. Links could just become a board or a thread within a board. The Home page would likely just be merged with the Forum board because it serves no good purpose.

The existing sidebar would likely be put into its own page merged with Connect. Or maybe condensed into a top bar.

This is just us reinventing the private BBS and IRC, which has worked for decades. It will work for Cyberix as well.

We could also deploy a webchat on this overhauled Cyberix under its own tab.

So, now, if you don't have a password, all you can do is:
Forums: You can read whatever public boards are available, which will likely be one or two. I'll allow you to post anonymously as well. I'll finally put AutoMod into Phase 2 where it can autonomously nuke bad posts on public boards, too.

Webchat: You can chat with whoever else is on the webchat. This will not be bridged to IRC/XMPP/Mumble/SSH since they will be password locked.
Connect: You can play on any game server just as you were able to before. No changes here.

I have no real plans on "well, what if the password gets leaked". You'd have to know where to find that leaked password in order to get in. That alone continues to solve most of our problems (bots) and nothing is stopping me from recycling the passwords anyway

I am doing this because I have, for the most part, lost interest in attracting new users. While this kind of high entry barrier might instead turn away curious lurkers, our current open model wasn't retaining users (low activity) and we've only been receiving spam and garbage as a consequence. This does not remove our completely anonymous posting. I plan on establishing a public board in this new forum that will allow you to post as free as you were able to post before.

So this rework is supposed to solve the bot problem and gradually gather good users over a period of time, correct?

I didn't delete any criticism.

>readability. frost wasnt a good ui
All of the information you need is right in front of you. Instead of having to click through several pages multiple times, you have access to the boards list, threads from the selected board, and the selected topic all in one page. You do not have to keep going back and forth between pages in order to navigate the website.

Efficiency is important too, y'know.

>its actually funny to cry cargo cult and then adopt shitty old uis
Do you know why we cry "cargo cult"? Not once in this thread did I ever suggest doing this purely for aesthetics. This project aims to improve the usability of the site.

That? I didn't even interpret that as criticism. I didn't even understand what it was trying to say in the first place.

Can you tell me why you believe readability has regressed? What's bad about Frost's UI?

The new UI holds together better than I expected. I was skeptical at first but now I don't really understand the criticism. I don't think that it is cargo cult and those who saying it suffer from baby duck syndrome and can't accept new changes. It really became easier to navigate, looks actually unique and stands out. I'll test it under chawan later, I'm interested in how it will manage preserving the CSS layout.
Things to consider:
1. The [ new thread ] button is not really that noticable, and it is hard to see on the dark theme. Can you make it so it looks just like those buttons on top of the page, with styling and shit, and not just text? I think it will make it better
2. Will you add the ability to sort by date and/or replies? It will be really handy
3. Did you close the registrations? If yes, what those folks that didn't consider registering because it was optional (like me) shall do? I don't really want to be left out just because I haven't managed to register just in time before the overhaul.

Yes.

>2. Will you add the ability to sort by date and/or replies? It will be really handy

Yes.

Technically, yes. Accounts, unless you're a moderator or donator, have been completely useless and this has been the case for quite a while. So I removed the registration form.

Column sorting has been implemented and the blue links in dark mode have been corrected to reflect the coffee cinnamon colorset.

[AutoMod] action=keep R:8 E:7 N:6 C:9 | The post offers interesting, detailed technical observations about legacy Internet Explorer compatibility. The writing is direct and engaging, fitting the forum's tech-oriented nature well.
This new UI is awesome and works surprisingly well.

I just tested several versions of Internet Explorer.
IE8 on XP: Everything looks similar to Supermium but the webchat refresh is quite slow, also the labels for handle and message don't show up.
IE6 on 2K and IE5.5 on 98SE: PNG transparency is broken.
IE4 on Win95 VM: Looks worse as there's no support for multiple CSS files but still usable. (posting from this one right now)
IE3 on Win95b 486@100Mhz: Predates the PNG format (both came out in 1996) and the buttons for webchat send and post reply are just unclickable text. But everything is viewable at least.

Also tested Retrozilla 2.2 on the same 486: Looks and works great but everything loads slow as shit.
