Try it out yourself
I just noticed this:
Step 1: Look at screen in the dark. I was on my lowest brightness dark mode phone
Step 2: Turn away from the screen and close your eyes. Ensure contrast by cupping your eyes with your hands

Result: your eyes/vision will begin to flicker and flash like a motherfucker despite there being no light present

I am also reminded that LED lights flicker and flash a shitton and cause eye degradation and stress. So dark mode means SHIT when it comes to truly keeping your eyes safe, huh, since its all artificial light in the end..

What the fuck is this, really? Did I answer my own question already? Why the fuck isn't this a prevalently discussed issue

You should have redshift installed on all devices to remove the blue light at night. It is the blue light at night that harms your eyes and body, because the blue light regulates the day/night cycle in all life.
LED light is not ideal since even when using software to remove the blue light spectrum LEDs still spike on the blue light spectrum naturally so you can never get rid of it fully, so try to remove all LED in your home and around you.
