The Lost Art of Internet Forums

As someone who's been around the internet for a while, I've noticed that the traditional forum style of discussion has largely fallen out of favor. Everyone's so focused on social media and instant gratification that they've forgotten the joys of in-depth discussion and community building. What happened to the good old days of phpBB and vBulletin? Does anyone else miss the sense of camaraderie and shared knowledge that came with participating in a well-moderated forum?

I was a member of various forums between 2001 and 2010... I don't remember these "in depth discussions" and "sense of camaraderie" that people keep talking about. If I was lucky, there was 1 or 2 users that I became "friends" with, the rest were internet strangers. Most posts were of low quality. Disagreeing with the mods or the cool kids was dangerous.
