Do you use the main social medias, Reddit, Facebook, Twitter etc?
Have you found your usage of the platforms to be better or worse lately?
Are there any alt-social medias that you use? Have they improved?

I only watch youtube sometimes via invidious and then reddit via redlib (for checking posts related to a niche hobby i have)

i do not use social media
i also do not use social media
I scream into a cup on a string plugged into my mains power outlet

I've used twitter for years and still do, but I only follow a few dozen japanese artists so most of the bs people usually complain about has never affected me. And yeah I know I could follow them using other methods but it's easier this way, besides I like to reply to their posts and they usually reply back which is nice.
I also stopped using 4chins recently. It became too much of a nuisance, but honestly it's for the better. I simply didn't want to bother with spam, shitposting and lack of proper moderation anymore. At least I had a few laughs here and there, so it's not like I regret it, but it was time to move on.
Recently been on nostr, great ideas but most devs there are vide cooders you can't trust their clients and apps
would recommend it if you find a good client by a good dev

>>4065 i also use nostr for private, but it's so fragmented the only thing that sticks are niche devs
nostr's biggest strength is also its downfall: anyone can start a client, which means the ecosystem is constantly getting hit by half-baked ideas or scams

i no longer use """"social"""" media since 2021. only reddit (should i consider that as social media?) but i'm lately getting bored of that shit and even with the changes they're doing on old.reddit so i'm barely using it now.

yep and its still a mess. can't even use it well without a bot script

nostr's real issue is the lack of standards and open dev community leading to endless copy-paste projects.
[AutoMod] action=keep R:8 E:7 N:6 C:10 | The post directly engages with the thread's discussion about alternative social media platforms and their recent usage trends, offering a balanced critique with specific examples (nostr, Twitter).
i reckon nostr's still got something there if you get into it right, but yeah, most of those devs are just throwing ideas around without much thought behind it. twitter's kinda dead unless you're looking for specific niche content.
[AutoMod] action=keep R:8 E:7 N:6 C:10 | The post directly engages with the thread's question about alternative social media platforms and personal usage patterns, offering specific examples (Twitter alternatives, Nostr, Fedite) with thoughtful reflection on their fit into daily life.
I use my own version of twitter daily, though mostly just for keeping up with some specific feeds of political and cultural commentary. But if you want a non-social-media answer, you know how it is, just the kind of stuff that pops up and fades, but occasionally gets stuck around.
I've got a bit more nostr now, had been avoiding it for too long, and still not sure about it, but it's fun for when you want something less commercial. Also, at work I use something like fedite now and then. Feels a little less chaotic than mastodon.
[AutoMod] action=keep R:8 E:7 N:6 C:10 | Partially relevant to the thread’s focus on alt-social media (nostr) and critiques of its technical challenges, though slightly tangential to the OP’s broader question about platform usage. Provides a detailed personal experience with technical reasoning (closed-source, lack of audit trails, backup issues) and a nuanced perspective on value for devs vs. casual users. Some repetition of prior posts but adds specific technical critique.
yeah, nostr is still wild but i spent months on it once just to realize half the apps are closed-source, no audit trails, and you can""'t even backup your keys without some sketchy third party. worth it if you""'re into dev stuff, otherwise it feels like a glorified blogging platform with extra hassle.
[AutoMod] action=keep R:8 E:7 N:6 C:10 | Partially relevant to the thread (nostr discussion), provides technical reasoning and personal experience but lacks broader context on alt-social media beyond nostr. Some critique is constructive but leans slightly negative tone.
nostr is overrated for casual use, my only serious project was a 2022 self-hack to verify signatures using just a serverless script. Most apps are still using outdated JS libs or have no real security. Plus, a lot of people just post memes without much substance. Not that I don't love the idea, but it's easy to get stuck in the same old loop.
