It starts with this retarded foot in the door. Once you have it, you'll be at full-on 'scan-your-government-id-to-use-your-phone' within 8 years or less. When there's a serious push into this kind of things people will look to things like systemd who already gather a little bit of info and think, "well they're already doing this, lets just ask them to verify their age next". It's the 'boiling the frog' metaphor.
And what if i choose not to verify my age, or if i can't? Does my server just not boot? It's leaving a lot of questions unasked and unanswered.
What about where i live versus where the server is? Will californian laws force igor in uzbekistan to gather, verify and report my info?

What if i set my age to 9? Will Debian maintainer Jeremy Bicha hunt me down and rape me?

Clearly this would not be the case, but then again, they weren't specific when they really should've been. I read the California bill, and the failure to be specific bugs me when it would take so little effort. Perhaps an extra word like 'consumer', or an extra line such as '... applies to operating systems developed for personal computing use, including but not limited to, desktop computers, laptops, and smartphones'.

Artix has confirmed it won't comply with age verification laws, as per a developer's post here. I don't know any other distro also refusing to comply, but I heard (unconfirmed) rumors openSUSE won't follow along as it's based in Germany. Other rumors (also unconfirmed) have been spoken of for other distros not based in the US.

Still, the fact systemd is adding the age data is not boding well, even for distros that refuse to comply.
