I bought some pizza from a major chain I used to work for as a teenager a looong time ago recently. It was the first time I paid for fast food in probably 15 years.

I planned to pick up using the drive-thru window. But when I got there some fat black woman was in front of me blaring shitty rap music and constantly laying on her horn trying to get an employee to come to the window. She'd ordered food 5 minutes ago and expected it to be done when she got there. After the 6th or 7th time she laid on the horn I got fed up and decided to go inside.

The kitchen was running behind because a bunch of large orders had come in. So my pizza was running a little late. No big deal. The women inside was nice and gave me a free fountain drink to make up for the wait.

While standing there 5 different doordash gig drivers showed up for those large orders. One was a 60+ year old white woman. The other four were 16-21 year old kids. I asked all of them why they bother working for doordash because I know the pay must be shit. The old woman said she was forced to do it to make ends meat. The teenagers just ignored me because they were too busy staring at their cell phones. One of them was arguing with the woman running the register because the shitty app wasn't working and she didn't even have the $10 in cash in her pocket to cover the cost of the order.

Meanwhile, a depressed delivery driver for the store is standing there upset because he knew he was going to get fired soon. Since the chain is doing away with having drivers and going full doordash for deliveries. I watched him walk out with an $10 order (small pizza and a 2 liter drink). Meanwhile, the old white woman was preparing to leave with 6 large pizzas, a salad and a bunch of other stuff.

My pizza only cost $10 and it was not worth the wait or expense. I don't know what they've done but quality is horrible compared to when I worked there in the early 2000s.

Oh and for what it's worth working for this company used to be a good job in 2000-2006. It put me through college and I made really good money off tips when I was a driver and later I made good money as a manager. When I worked there we had a staff of 4-8 people depending on the night. Usually 3-4 drivers always there even on slow nights. Everyone got along and the work was pretty easy. We stood around smoking pot most of the night and would even snort cocaine off the manger's desk behind the two-way mirror sometimes. It was a laid back job in other words and the pay was more than fair for what we were doing. I sometimes made $300+ a night in tips even on a slow night. The store didn't get any of them.

I asked the manager of this store how she felt about the company these days. She said it was a horrible place to work for now. They were always under staffed (never more than 4 in the store even on busy nights). She said drivers made absolutely nothing because no one tips them anymore due to the "delivery fee" ($5) and the "delivery fee" doesn't even go to the driver. She said she was making top pay and it was less than what I was making in 2005 as a manger.

She said they're phasing our having on-site delivery drivers in a few months and will be letting doordash/whatever handle all deliveries going forward. This is a corp. policy she has no control over it. She said they'd already gotten rid of delivery drivers in most large cities months ago and it was filtering down to smaller stores over the next few months.

She also said the entire menu was changed a few years back which is why the pan pizza now tastes like cardboard.

the corpos are wiping out yet another genre of entry-job for the zoomies
