Woman, 21, dies during bungee jump in Brazil after 'staff forget to attach cord'

A bungee jumper plunged to her death after being thrown from a bridge when workers 'forgot' to attach a cord.

Footage shows the harrowing moment the as-yet unnamed 21-year-old was thrown from the bridge totally unaware she was not secured to the cable, an elastic rope which supports thrill-seekers during their jump, local media reports.

The woman fell to her death from Skeleton Bridge, in the municipality of Limeira, in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, after being thrown by staff without the essential safety rope, local authorities confirmed.

Disturbing video shared on social media showed team members carrying her to the platform before she is thrown over the side, followed by people shouting to them about the rope.

The Military Police said she was participating in a bungee jump activity organised by a private company.

Emergency services attended the scene, who could only certify the the death of the woman. Her body was transferred to the Legal Medical Institute as an investigation was launched. Her fiancé was also at the bridge and was taken for medical attention after becoming ill when he learned she had died.

The woman uploaded a tragic social media post just minutes before her death. Posting a photo of the scene on Instagram, she wrote: “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge???”

The case is being investigated by the Civil Police, it has been announced. The force will determine whether anyone involved in the event will face criminal charges.

The Limeira City Council has confirmed that it will file a complaint against the Brazilian federal government.

"It is necessary to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to a federal area that has presented known risks for years and still lacks the necessary protection measures," said the mayor of Limeira, Murilo Félix.
