Grilling emergency

>don’t want coworkers to know my main hobbies are watching anime and jerking off
>for years any time they ask what I’m doing I tell them grilling
>fast forward to yesterday
>”hey anon gonna have the famous grill going for the 4th?”
>haha you know it
>hey why don’t a few of us drop by to try some
>blurt out “sure!” without thinking
They are gonna be here in about 5 hours. I have never even touched a grill in my life. The previous owner of my property left one of these little round ones like in pic related, but I can’t even find the fucking on switch to make it get hot.

Is there some kind of trick I can use to get through tonight with them still believing all those years of lies about me grilling? Or should I think about getting a new job?

5 hours...
That should be enough time to watch the first season of Shokugeki no Souma, that should give you some ideas maybe.
Taking 45 minutes to pleasure yourself to hotties from the show leaves you with... about 15 for prep.
You got this, OP

You've lied to them for years so just lie one more time and text everyone that something came up and you're gonna have to cancel. You lie a lot, you'll figure out something.
How the fuck is this even a question? How do people go through life?

He is looking for the on button on a charcoal grill, I don’t think 5 hours is gonna be enough time to get him where he needs to be

Plus, don’t they only ever do restaurant style cooking in that series?

Dunno, never saw it. Don't really watch cooking shows. Some good eating shows recently, Meido-san ha Taberu dake last season was nice. Koufuku Graffiti is my all-time favorite, such a good show.

Yeah he should just take a bat to the grill he'd never use anyway, order takeout, and tell people who come over that he damaged it moving it outside. OP is probably too stupid though so he'll probably just fuck up trying to cook something and get blown out by his coworkers.

your coworkers know you've been bullshitting them and they called your bluff. you're fucked. even if you manage to pull yourself together and buy some charcoal and sausages in the next few hours, a) I doubt you'll be able to pull off anything that suggests you have years of grilling experience, and b) a guy who's main hobby and passion is grilling isn't going to just have some dinky little round grill, he would have some serious equipment. so I mean, you can pull a George Constanza if you want and commit to the bit, but your coworkers most likely know you're full of shit and I doubt you'll be able to convince them otherwise. just call it off. say you have to attend to an emergency. they'll know that's bullshit too, but at least you won't embarrass yourself in front of them. and in the future, just tell people you're into video games or something. nobody actually cares that much about what you do in your free time.

Update - this is the option I went with. I drove 90 minutes away to a small shop that had a 4th of July special on ready to eat hot dogs fresh off their grill. About 10 minutes before I’ll pop them in the microwave to get them real hot so they feel fresh off the grill.

I get everyone a dog and a Keystone and I think I can pull this off

people don't just put their grill away unless it's winter lol. there's nothing OP can do to not come across as at least a little bit of a weirdo, every excuse is just digging his hole deeper (assuming any of this is even real, which it very likely isn't but it's fun so whatever).
honestly the best thing OP could probably do at this point if he isn't willing to just outright cancel, is say that he had something come up earlier in the day and ran out of time to prepare a grill cookout but he still wanted to host so he bought some dogs and beers. apologize and say you'll host a proper grill another time, which buys him enough time to actually learn how to use it, or just keep pushing it back until people forget about it.

OP here, sorry for the late update, but we ended up going to a local fireworks show after and I got home late and was tired. Tldr - I think I got away with it

>fortune smiled upon me and a light, but long, rainstorm passed through the area
>not only did this give me a great excuse to have pre-grilled everything, it also kept everyone in the house and no one questioned me when I said I put the grill away
>everyone thought the dogs were great
>one of them actually name dropped the place I got them from, but it didn’t seem like it was in an accusatory way, but more just a reference to the flavor being similar
>just laughed it off and said maybe they got the idea from me which made everyone laugh and move on
>rained cleared out and a local fireworks show said they would be behind schedule, but going forward with their show
>went and did that and I was in the clear

They said we should have a grill out again on a nicer day, but I don’t think I can pull this off a second time so I’m gonna make sure that I never accidentally put myself in this position again.

Quick! Go to a grocer that has grilled chicken. Get some charcoals and throw them in the grill along with the grilled chicken on the grates. Pass that shit off like you grilled it. Just microwave it before you put the chicken on the grates so that it is actually warm when you lift the grill lid to show your guests.
