Anonymous · 2026-07-03 05:41 [#4222][report] >>21559 >>21559 >I think its pretty much canon that humans have the worst tech in the setting
its... complicated
as a species, ork definitively have worse tech, and tyranids dont use tech at all
and WITHIN the imperium theres different factions, in broad terms you find 5, from worst to best tech:
>Imperial Guard >Sisters of Battle >Space Marines >Adeptus Mechanicus >Custodes
the guard gets the shittiest gear by far, they wield the weakest small arms, possess no antigrav vehicles and some of their weapons, like plasma guns, can malfunction and explode on their faces, vaporizing them
the sisters of battle do have better gear, on account of being an army subordinate to the imperial church, they get preferential treatment compared to the guard, they regularly field power armor and bolters like space marines, but weaker since they are designed for unaugmented humans
the space marines are pretty much the elite army of the imperium, due to a fairly recent lore development they now field antigrav vehicles in substantial numbers and they plasma weapons no longer explode (unless you disable the safety features for a more powerful shot)
Adeptus Mechanicus, from what i know of the lore, not many units they field are explicitly more advantaged than those of the space marines, they have antigrav tanks and lots of cyborgs, however in-lore the mechanicus build almost all the tech used by other imperial factions, and while their understanding of tech is more religious than scientific, they do have a level of understanding, so it stands to reason they MUST have the better tech compared to all other factions except...
custodes, the emperor's bodyguards, each hand made, they are the wagyu beef to the space marine's McDonalds, i think its been established their tech comes from the dark age of technology, so the Mechanicus doesnt understand it and probably cannot even replicate it, it might be comparable to tech fielded by the Tau, a nominally more advanced alien faction

The whole thing of chapters being made up of only 1000ish space marines is plain retarded but thats what I expect from the people who created it because they have no real world knowledge of how a military works. A space marine would die to a rpg or grenade launcher, the best tank in the setting would get shot from 5kms from a US tank in seconds before they can even react. The whole setting is stupid the moment you try to apply real world logic into it.
We are talking about a setting where: >Space ships exist that have the fire power and tech to glass a whole planet in a matter of days yet they choose to fight ship battles like ships of the line. >You got advanced weapons that can kill people from 1km+ yet you have sword duels nearly every battle. >You have advanced fighters that can go from orbit down into the planet yet they fight like WW2 dog fighters. The setting isn't supposed to work IRL because it was meant to be over the top and what matters at the end is that we get to read, play, or see some cool space people kill other space people.
Imperium ships do have shields, yes. That is why titans are such a big deal, because they mount the same shields that you would usually only see a starship packing. Ditto for their weapons.

For example, I don't need a whole wikipedia to understand that in Legend of Galactic Heroes, space ships are slim because they fire very accurate neutron beams at each other at extreme ranges, so they want to reduce target profile. Power armor uses energy to tightly bind the material together and offers a decent chance of surviving an intermediate caliber, it is however extremely heavy and expensive requiring rare materials and meticulous manufacture as well as the power pack.
Ceramite is unpowered but can offer infantry a small chance of survival. It is also one of the components of power armor and used in tank armor. The material supposedly spreads energy throughout the ceramite plate very rapidly, so instead of energy focussed on a small area in a short period of time enough to break the bonds between molecules, the entire plate moves like a shock absorber. If such a futuristic material were used in a tank then in theory our armor piercing tungsten rods or shaped charges would simply push the plate backwards, albeit with considerable force, if the plate is well backed up it would have minimal effect, perhaps only a scuff.
We would have to pound these tanks hard like a jackhammer in the hopes of breaking them down in some way. It perhaps explains the high profile of these tanks, which to us seems like a bad idea. While we're pelting them their goal is to return fire and quickly and conveniently eliminate whatever has revealed itself by attacking them.
This also makes sense in the context that these armies are fighting some very irregular forces, tyranids that ranges from swarms and to giants, ork chicanery, chaos nonsense. They need a level of flexibility when it comes to basically blasting everything in sight, as opposed to a highly specialized main battle tank intended to kill other tanks like itself. The commander's sword is actually functional in the event some xeno or chaos abomination gets inside the tank while our tank crews would be ill prepared. See the pic related? There are two space marines standing in an elevator. See the guy pointed by the arrow? Yeah, that's not a guy. That's a servitor. A human who has had his limbs amputated, most of his brain scooped off, what is left mind-wiped, plugged full of cybernetic parts and made into ...an elevator. That's what he is. Not a person, an elevator. That's all he is. Plugged into a life-support system and spending the rest of his miserable existance as an elevator because that's what they would rather do: Rather a thousand humans be repurposed into home appliances than have a single computer system that does not have wet-ware parts. Because that's how much they distrust any kind of "smart computers".
Anonymous · 2026-07-05 21:50 [#4774][report] Just like >>21711 said, it should be noted that ceramite is not modern "ceramic armor", but a highly advanced metamaterial (from our point of view).
It was mostly designed to be highly resistant against directed energy weapons (which most of the weapons were back before the Age of Strife/Old night). So it's super good against lasguns, volkite and even offering some protection against plasma/melta (although rarely survives a direct hit).
Against kinetic impacts (bullets etc physical projectiles) it does function somewhat as stated: offers shock absorbtion and ablative properties. A thick slab of rounded ceramite, when hit by a BEEG BULLIT is most likely to ricochet it off. If the projectile comes in a nasty angle or is somewhat AP, it is more likely to just blast a cratering hole into the ceramite (much like ablative armor) rather than to penetrate.
Obviously, a lot of the weapons in WH40k are ludicreously overpowered and simply CAN punch through (and those space marine armors do have their weak spots, such as in the joints) so some casualties might be expected. But overall, against anything infantry-carried they should be pretty sold defense.
Anonymous · 2026-07-05 22:12 [#4776][report] >>21578 >I am sorry, but what can those faggots do against an F-35 dropping JDAMs and JSMs 10km off the ground, or an endless streams of fibre optics FPV drones with RPG AT rounds, while the operators sit comfortably some 50km away from the front lines? Generally they deal with those by not being there by the time the planes or drones arrive. Or by distracting/suppressing them with their own air assets like thunderhawks until they can extract.
The stereotypical space marine chapter operates as a high mobility heavy assault force. Drop a squad of space marines where they can do the most damage with the least amount of resistance, kill everyone between them and the target, then move on or extract them back to the safety of the battle barge before the main response force arrives. Lather, rinse, repeat, until the enemy's leadership/logistics/morale has been sufficiently destroyed and they lose cohesion. If they need some fire support drop a whirlwind or predator with them or give em a dreadnought or two, and if they need to crack some really heavy defenses teleport a squad of terminators into the middle of their base and have them clean house.
Anonymous · 2026-07-05 22:35 [#4778][report] >>21634 I mean you're right that scale in 40k makes no goddamn sense but it's still pretty retarded to imply that the marines have to destroy every military asset on the planet and have boots on the ground absolute control over every meter of the globe in order to win. They have a spaceship, they can hit us far more effectively than we can hit back. All they really need to do is whack enough people, cause enough damage, and blow up enough infrastructure to convince most conventional forces to surrender, decapitate any that refuse, and then set up a loyalist government to police the planet under threat of them coming back and blowing everything up again.
Said government may have all the effectiveness and life expectancy of a dying crack addict but the Astartes don't really care. Dealing with that is the rest of the Imperium's job, and worst case scenario another chapter swings by in a century or two and does the same thing all over until Earth gets the picture or the Imperium gets fed up and nukes the planet.
