>Vichan has reached its end of life. many of us have lost interest in the project, and the current direction of the internet has not been good for imageboards, whether its ID verification laws, big social media companies killing competition, or Google being hostile towards smaller sites. There are other imageboard engines out there but even if you use them, these are still issues you will need to think about if you start an imageboard or UGC website. You can still install or fork vichan, but do so at your own risk.

It's not possible to run a vichan instance without getting flooded by spam of illegal bullshit and you have barely any tools to deal with it, so every altchan runs its own modifications.
It would be better to start from scratch, rather than trying to patch the existing software to try to tackle issues that didn't exist when it was first created.

If I were to ever make an image board, I would consider doing down a very different route. Use a custom protocol and a python script the user must run on their machine which creates a local http server. Since search engines don't work anymore discoverability no longer has any value.

I've been making my own imageboard engine to run locally on small devices like OpenWRT routers.
It used to use only FastCGI with a tiny binary but I've been greatly expanding it and moved to HTTP server + SQLite.

At this point it's fully functional but the problem is of course... what's the point? You can't put it online without bad actors slapping your shit, and if you put it online there's already a bunch of other imageboards with 3 users.

I think there will be an alternative emerging. The only hurdle is the constant AI slop project spam, so it will be harder to spot a serious project when it arrives.
You have to think about all the spam, bots and schizos during the design phase already and may need an account system as well, which can be optional for instances to enable, so you can still have anonymous places. Maybe the ability to federate as well.

vichan was good. It gets used a lot and every little no-experience fag can modify it, speaking for its quality. But the future needs something different.

I don't think you can have full anonymous boards in 2003+23, even 4chin and most boards will have some kind of identification in the backend with IP and cookies. You can have a registration but without kyc bs just a username and password, for the mods to see, while you can be anonymous to users, with the choice to reveal your identity when it matters. Traditional 2chan type boards need to develop and adapt to the modern time. Ironically, most of the OG boards pulled the plug because of illegal uploads and spam, yet no anontard thought of a solution.

Obviously the bulk of the work is automatic content moderation measures to prevent spam and illegal files from being uploaded. There's no easy way to handle this, the only disadvantage imageboards have to regular websites/social media in this regard is anonymity. If anons would accept mandatory accounts (but still anonymous posting), this problem would be resolved. But muh privacy, as if you don't have a burner email already.

imageboards were never anonymous towards he site owner, it was always tracked, otherwise the post cooldown wouldn't work
>yet no anontard thought of a solution
Because you have to rethink the concept.
The "10 pages of 15 threads per page" thing would have to go. Even with 15min thread creation cooldown, a single person with two devices can still occupy and bump 10 threads per board, so 7% of the whole catalog. Only super high activity can drown that out, and only 4chan had that.
So rather than trying to fight the uphill battle against schizos and spam, it would be better to provide the user with the ability to filter for what he is interested in. Basically, the concept of "boards" needs to go. The user should have the ability to say "i want to see tech threads that aren't about AI", which could be done by tagging. Then some schizo can spam 100 Anthropic advertising threads and it wouldn't bother you.
>>23097
>If anons would accept mandatory accounts (but still anonymous posting), this problem would be resolved
4chan does that. Without an established aged tracking cookie, you can't do much. If you delete your cookie, you more likely than not need to very with email (so: login).
It's not any different than posting with an account, we just don't call it that way and play pretend.

what makes IBs unique is that they are not complex
>you open a board
>make a thread
>with little-to-no text formatting
>attach file (or files, if your IB is fancy)
>post
>one thread is removed from board's page 10 is deleted
>your thread is added
>replies move threads from any page to page 1
That's pretty much it. I, for example, don't use any filters on boards I browse on principle. Why would you FORCE me to filter garbage instead of moderating it properly?

I’d imagine the users would treat 4ch as the ‘source of truth’ until a thread dies since most of the views and activity would be over here until a thread dies

Anything other than attaching multiple images to a post and live-reply updates makes boards feel like chatrooms and most alt chans don't have userbases large enough for that.

indeed, no one wants to pay to post. But look where the internet is right now. you'll get about 7k posts to ethereum for the cost of a 4chan pass and you cannot get banned a week in. twitter is asking $14 a month, reddit signed deals with big tech to contribute to the swarm. This is the truely at cost model, no middleman, no profiteering and in exchange there is no ads, no cloudflare mitm ssl termination, no google cookies, no blackbox central server fingerprinting your browser, and an archive that isn't missing any posts. To take the cake it judo's the swarm into blockspace, so at scale it you can profit from transaction fees as when you spend a penny, they have to spend a dollar to bot.

as the world enters the digital dark ages of the dead internet, this will be the only way to have based effortposts be globally disseminated without big tech blocking your broadcast
Anonymous · 2026-07-16 01:07 [#9467] [report]

There are plenty of reasons for that, but the biggest one of all is the fact that the imageboard format is dying. Activity depends on new users, and there are very few people joining imageboards, because they'd rather hang out on Discord or Tiktok.

It's pretty ridiculous for anon to complain about no one showing up to his sekret club when he spends his every waking moment laughing at newfags for not knowing the sekret. Even now you can't speak plainly, but to be fair, 4chan suppresses the alt chans due to the spam filter.

The only options are read the code to learn it yourself or pay the developer 60$ USD an hour for help.

It costs gas to fund a fresh wallet so sybilling has a cost as well. The language of anonymous sites is already locked in, it doesn't matter how you present content, a sense of association will make it just as Tor-adjacent as we already are.

Forcing people to post with a tripcode can't be good, also it's useless because if you ban a tripcode to ban a user then the user can generate another one. With accounts you could maybe force them to verify an email or something elseso it's not as easy as getting another tripocode.
For this reason I don't think tripcodes can be used as accounts.

Monero doesnt like people using the tx_extra field for reasons similar to the bip-110 arguement and its deanonymizing functions. I was initially targeting an anonymity profile similar to here but with the ethereum crops mandate were getting private reads/writes and with focil there is forced block inclusion so block creators cant just forget about your tx. So with the vpn self node+tor with crops plus mixer your getting a very steep anonymity profile that is fully composible with other onchain primitives.

Havent looked at other privacy chains too deeply to see what the game plan is

I wanted to make a pure dapp though too, to show the world what a pure vision non compromising dapp looks like, so many scams out there many dont even know the full potential

I respect the vision and admittedly that makes sense why you'd decide to go with ETH in that case. There are some less popular but well established privacy coins I've been keeping track of because they could enable something very similar to your vision but with faster settlement, inherent anonymity and lower transactional costs but I don't think they're ready yet so again fair enough to go with ETH and have something real if imperfect vs something that might be perfect on paper but doesn't yet exist.

Don't know where else to post this, but YouTube's comment section has been driving me crazy
I swear, every video I click on, every comment section I peek at, it's always the same style of comments
AI-glaze-bots, it's what it feels like, specifically designed to highlight something positive about the video I'm watching
There's no way YouTube isn't running some AI-algorithm on comment sections to "increase perception of a video's value" or to "push positive sentiment" or whatever
And it's the same with this website, but under a different rule-set.
It isn't the first time that I've noticed that, the moment the keyword AI gets brought up, no matter the thread, suddenly, a swarm of AI-defenders shows up, seemingly at least a dozen of them, endlessly patting each other in the back, "good-effort post sir!" they go.
It's the least genuine thing I've ever seen, I swear, in all my years browsing this website, (which is not as many as some of you, to be clear), I've never seen anything ever get this fiercely and unanimously defended other than the discourse surrounding AI.
It's over, the internet is over.

I'll say a little more, but this is the last one.
Wherever I go, I keep seeing people argue that,
>If you think AI is bad for X, try using one of the actually good models
And I'm like, how the fuck is increasing the barrier of entry from "some knowledge + some expertise + some software" to dozens of multi-thousand-dollar GPUs, or, using proprietary, gate-kept models through expensive-ass tokens a good thing?
>X has been democratized
They say, the ones that have already secured their wealth and their place, that is.
But it doesn't feel that way. It feels like X has been re-monopolized, reclaimed.
We're now renting the ability to do X, the ability we used to refine, the ability we could carry and share, the ability that might've given us the opportunity to gain some bread.
It is now being hoarded, and we're renting it, but we don't get to own it, no, they can take it away from us whenever they want to.
People are mad about digital media, we're heading onto the age of digital abilities.

4chan has the same A/B testing horseshit as the rest of the Internet now, so when something goes wrong like that, it only happens to a random handful of people and they can never figure it out. Like how I had to go for over a month without watching a single YouTube video because I had an adblocker. Even switching it off didn't work; I know this because I tried. Nobody is even advertising there lmao

I also had the 4chan rangeban for 5-6 weeks, which I think is the same thing you're talking about. One day, it just went away on its own.

Would be nice if I could ever get around to making a proper backend but first step of that is user handling and that's such a fucking pain.

On some boards it's down to 2007 levels so there's no way it is "normalizing". Many boards also feel genuinely slower, like /g/ has the same threads up for what feels like the entire week now. It's in fact ten times slower than in 2007 because back then the bump limit was something like 100 posts, today it is 5 times that, so threads rotate significantly slower.

[deleted by 4chan - preserved by Cyberix]

Alright so,

4chan got popular in the mid 2000s because you could share images easily instead of having to use photo bucket to share stuff on forums. No one cared about the fact that your stuff will be deleted because the culture was "on the internet no one knows you're a dog" in the good way

There are two values to 4chan's anonymity in theory. The first is that it would promote higher quality discussion by focusing on the subject matter instead of the person saying it. The second is that the anonymity provided to you will allow you to share things you wouldn't otherwise

The first value was proven false (see the poopdickschizo greentext about modern 4chan generals), turns out it's impossible to actually make a website anonymous if someone is interested in being not anonymous or a personality

The second value is not valued by most people. 4chan implemented $pur which is an Israeli spyware company middleman. If you are not using a ban 3vasion website run by zoopedos you have compromised this value so obviously you never cared about it either. And normies really don't see the value in sharing opinions anonymously any more. You can share /pol/ opinions on twitter using your real name, no one cares anymore.

Actually having anonymity means you cannot moderate the website. Evasion is unstoppable

And of course the moderation on this site is a joke and the mods and admins are not interested in the fundamental values of the site.

I don't care how many times you tell me to kill myself. An image of a 10 year old in a swimsuit from an Amazon listing is not a rule 1 violation. When the social contract is broken between users and mods, and mods do not have sufficient power to stop evaders what you get is a core group of angry users who will post whatever they want. And here we are

4chan is over because it's not really necessary anymore and the kids have moved on. I'll still use it to post AI children in swimsuits though every so often
Anonymous · 2026-07-18 13:18 [#9918] [report]
[deleted by 4chan - preserved by Cyberix]

And I want to emphasize again, barely is actually interested in what 4chan truly promised. Take a look through this thread. Look at how many people are suggesting some form of accounts or email verification. Honestly, my personal issue is that there isn't enough like-minded people to fill a board because they're all panopticon loving tourists.

Imageboards will not go away though because they are useful for low bandwidth and no JavaScript environments such as Tor. The image board is the perfect format for ephemeral darknet sites when expiring content is actually a feature not a bug

You do understand that the difference between 4chan, twitter, and oldschool forums is 1. accounts, 2. how the frontend presents posts/threads and 3. the post length limits? I could make threads, get replies, and post images in 2004 on phpBB and Invision based forums. You could write a custom frontend based on the 4chan API threads end point to get a design that looks exactly the same as phpBB board indexes. The post backlinks already act as the reply collections on twitter, it's only missing the reblog and like buttons and those would be trivial to add to the backend/frontend.

>If you are more worried about CP spam than just doing your job as an admin
CP spam is basically an hourly thing on even smaller altchans (we have a tracker for it), blocking that isn't a matter of "doing your job", it's impossible to do fast enough so your users are not subject to it. And I should point out that as long as you are not taking it down, you are technically hosting CP on your server, which has legal ramifications.

>and allowing anonymous discussion then you are not interested in the values of image boards and a matrix server would be more valuable for you
We are having anonymous discussions right here right now, it has nothing to do with blocking javascript or tor. Those are necessary for MODERATION, otherwise it is impossible to ban bad posters, and once your site gets even slightly popular you'll be flooded by the first dumbfucks who want to prove they have the biggest autism. But maybe you are too much of a newfag to remember how much of a problem this used to be here on 4chan as well, we even have a banner to commemorate it (download the image, rename it to .hta, and shit bricks).

4chan is popular enough.

>Every single other social media with 1000x more spam can do it.
They have revenues and can afford paid workers whose job is to do that. Even 4chan has people in paid positions to take care of the site (RapeApe gets a monthly salary of $4000+ from 4chan LLC). A small altchan has 1 admin and maybe a few mods who can't possibly take care of the site 24/7 for free.

>s#arty figured out how to stop the spam once and for all and they're a larger altchan than you.
Yes, by extreme fingerprinting.

>Yes, I am because I know that I'm posting on a r3sidential prox.
You still have your user session and your browser fingerprint recorded for every post. If you don't then you are either dealing with the 2 minute post cooldowns and retarded captchas, or you voluntarily submitted your banking contact by having bought a pass.

>You are not having an anonymous discussion.
An anonymous discussion means that we, who are posting and replying to each other, do not know of each others identity. The person running the place still needs to have a way of tracking us for reasons such as the safety of the place and, you know, laws. It's no different than a mailing list in a magazine where the editors publish incoming mail without names; except for the scale and automatisation (which is simply a result of technical prowess).

Imageboards have always had access logs on their servers. You don't need to create an account to post, and nobody in the threads knows who you are, but anyone in charge of the site can identify your IP address extremely easily. Complete and utter anonymity was never the fundamental purpose of imageboards. You can hide behind muh seven proxies if you want, but it doesn't make you a "more authentic" imageboard user; it just means you are either a severe autist or a CP spammer.

One website got around this by implementing an AI-enabled automoderator that scans all posts for content. According to them, it implements a number of heuristics to try to verify if the post is associated with the topic at hand, whether it contains similar wording to posts made before, and whether the image appears to be CP.
Its done a pretty good job of keeping the trash off the board.

It would be painful to make a new account, like how it's to delete your cookies in here, so that will discourage people from acting retarded and loosing their reputation. A backend account with the ability to present it to the frontend when the users want, would be better for moderation, while you should allow fully anon posts but they will be less convenient. But this assumes you already have a core userbase somewhere, otherwise it will be like any other dead altchan.

position based puzzles are better, I mean flip the image until it aligns, or the puzzle piece to its right place, or which is far and which is near, etc. They're easier on humans and hard on AI. Alright so,4chan got popular in the mid 2000s because you could share images easily instead of having to use photo bucket to share stuff on forums. No one cared about the fact that your stuff will be deleted because the culture was "on the internet no one knows you're a dog" in the good way There are two values to 4chan's anonymity in theory. The first is that it would promote higher quality discussion by focusing on the subject matter instead of the person saying it. The second is that the anonymity provided to you will allow you to share things you wouldn't otherwise The first value was proven false (see the poopdickschizo greentext about modern 4chan generals), turns out it's impossible to actually make a website anonymous if someone is interested in being not anonymous or a personality The second value is not valued by most people. 4chan implemented $pur which is an Israeli spyware company middleman. If you are not using a ban 3vasion website run by zoopedos you have compromised this value so obviously you never cared about it either. And normies really don't see the value in sharing opinions anonymously any more. You can share /pol/ opinions on twitter using your real name, no one cares anymore.Actually having anonymity means you cannot moderate the website. Evasion is unstoppable And of course the moderation on this site is a joke and the mods and admins are not interested in the fundamental values of the site.I don't care how many times you tell me to kill myself. An image of a 10 year old in a swimsuit from an Amazon listing is not a rule 1 violation. When the social contract is broken between users and mods, and mods do not have sufficient power to stop evaders what you get is a core group of angry users who will post whatever they want. And here we are4chan is over because it's not really necessary anymore and the kids have moved on. I'll still use it to post AI children in swimsuits though every so often

Basically what 4chan is doing now but with 4chanX fix/themes. Floating board bar search in bar all that. Tbh the biggest things I would like is the floating post box its always been annoying and I think 4chanx does it best. I would not allow for multiple fucking images or huge long text posts on the pages in threads doesnt rly matter. search function etc the same. There is only show much you can change with an imageboard that will work. I still don't get how people used 4+4chan or these other altchans with a billion images cluttered as fuck front page.

Oh and huge fucking gripe is archives. We shouldn't have fuckin archives. I used to be in favor purely when 4chan used to be smaller but now its just fucking dumb faggots searching archives for schizo theories.

>Literally what new features do you add to an imageboard script?
You could make an imageboard which works off Bluesky. Boards would simply be posts from a bot with some incremental numbering, so the frontend doesn't need to deal with millions of replies to a single board post. Anon posting would be done via a relay server using an anon account, namefag posting would use your active Bluesky account.

That way you would need no real server to host, just a minimal server to run a bot. Of course moderation is a much bigger problem than hosting, but still.

There is value, to people like me, not to normgroids that just want to be entertained and stimulated. I'd never share my opinions under my real name unless I'm trying to get political power out of it so websites like this give me an out even if it's now mostly screaming into the void

But that was exactly my implication in my first paragraph. 4chan was valuable due to the internet at the time. Society has unfortunately moved on even if people like us have not.

I will never be ok with not being able to call someone a disgusting nigger tranny to their face in an online discussion. I have done this discord garbage before where you have to deal with power dynamics from losers who are more terminally online than you are because you can't just call them a disgusting tattooed freak. Most boards are down to 2007 levels of posting, and every board has anywhere between 1-5 AI threads (/g/ probably has more) so actual real posting levels are probably far far worse. Additionally, the site has 5x bigger bump limits so threads now stay around for a week when in 2007 they'd last at most a day (the faster thread rotation made every board feel a lot faster than they are now).
