Just found out that I have a high total cholesterol and freakishly high LDL for a 25 year old gamer. I barely even eat meat and am vegetarian most of the time, eating a lot of dairy and cheese. I don't really use butter for cooking at all, only olive or avocado oil, and don't eat many baked goods or cakes. I do eat ice cream regularly. The dairy is the only thing that I can think of causing my numbers to be this bad. I also binge drink 4-5 days per week and don't exercise. What foods am I supposed to eat in order to lower my LDL and cholesterol? I see people online saying that you should try eating <10g of saturated fat per day to achieve lowering cholesterol, but how is this even possible unless you eat nothing but raw vegetables and fruits?

I've heard that various deficiencies can cause high cholesterol. Vitamin C is one that is supposed to help lower cholesterol. You could look up any other and see if your diet might be low in them and try that.
I've also heard that sugar intake can cause cholesterol problems because some of it gets converted to fat in the liver. If you're regularly eating ice cream and drinking alcohol it could be taxing your liver too much because they both affect your liver in similar ways. It's why people who consume too much sugar for too long end up with liver disease just like alcoholics.

The less refined stuff is probably healthier but eating a lot of any refined fat probably isn't good for you and you should be getting most of your fat from whole foods instead. I don't think the issue with seed oil is that it comes from a seed but that it's just a processed food similar to white sugar and white flour. Eating seeds and fruit and whole grains won't really cause as many issues as eating a lot of refined oil/sugar/flour.

Anonymous · 2026-07-12 06:58 [#8331][report] >>23227 >One tablespoon of sunflower oil has the equivalent of 2 pounds if sunflower seeds Naw it's not that much. Sunflower seeds are like half fat. Assuming perfect extraction you'd only need about 30g of sunflower seeds to get a tablespoon of oil which is about 1/4 cup.
I know omega 6 has been blamed for things but it doesn't seem like people who eat a lot of nuts and seeds experience the issues it gets blamed for. Blaming omega 6 when everyone is eating processed food and most people are overweight is kind of missing the point. Everything will cause problems if it's being overconsumed, whole foods are harder to overconsume and will result in weight loss and improved health even if it still has omega 6 or carbs or whatever people want to blame.

They're already nutritionally robust, easily digestible, and pretty much impossible to overeat I genuinely think what people should do when they're hungry is eat a pound of beef and then decide if they even want anything else I'll admit I'm guilty of sneaking some avocados and blueberries, and when nobody is looking I might even have some cashews But for the most part it's beef, lamb, and if I'm feeling peckish a little slice of butter I tend to stay away from salting my food too because I want to make sure I'm eating for the food not the hit of sodium, and then I'll have salt separately on its own if I want some
Anonymous · 2026-07-12 07:31 [#8346][report] >>23229 >a little slice of butter Why not milk? I'm guessing you have an issue with carbs then.
Anyway, we're omnivores. Carbs give energy to our brains and muscles, your brain can use over 100g of carbs per day and your muscles/liver can hold another 500g or so for energy. There isn't really any downside to eating carbs if they're not heavily processed and overeaten. Nobody is really having issues from fruit unless they can't digest sugar well and it gives them digestive issues. Nobody is really having issues from potatoes unless they get loaded up with processed fat.
I don't really think everyone is meant to be eating a lot of meat anyway. It's been normal for some people to mostly have dairy at times, I feel better just drinking milk more often and might only want to eat meat once in a while. But other than that I'd be happier just eating some potatoes or brown rice or something like that. Hunter-gatherer groups that exist today will eat meat whenever they can get it but they often say honey is their favorite food and they'll eat a lot of it regularly too, and sometimes they even say fruit is preferred over meat too. They're all pretty healthy despite consuming carbs and more sugar than we think is healthy.
Also if you're mostly just eating meat then you're still missing out on a lot of nutrition. Organs and things like blood provide way more nutrients than meat does. That's why a lot of carnivores will go for those things first.

As for the carbs in the energy and all that, People don't realize this but your body is able to synthesize all the glucose that it needs from amino acids. If you are eating carbohydrates it's not going to do that. the process is gluconeogenesis and it's a normal thing your body is able to do since obviously as a wild animal you don't really get a choice of what you're eating and when you're eating it, so you need to be able to do things like that When you first eliminate or reduce your carbohydrate intake you're going to feel sluggish because your body hasn't kicked into production on its own yet, but once it acclimates you end up feeling normal

>People don't realize this but your body is able to synthesize all the glucose that it needs from amino acids. Your body can also create the cholesterol that it needs but that's not going to stop you from consuming cholesterol is it? Your body might be able to create the bare minimum of glucose it needs to function but that doesn't mean it's the optimal amount. That's why people on low carb diets often complain of dehydration because carbs help hydration and give quick energy to your muscles which is good if you have any amount of physical activity.

We can't do such a trick so our only choice is to chase down other animals that already turned the grass and leaves into those things and eat it directly off of them. It was so important our entire physiology adapted around being able to do that not just in our height the length of our legs or upright stance but even our genetic disposition and aptitude toward expanding our range We had to follow the herds. People may have snacked on things they foraged along the way, even a dog sometimes chews grass and berries, but the goal was always meat. That's how we ended up with our symbiotic relationship with canines all together, we were both after the same thing and instead of competing for it started working together for it.

> People may have snacked on things they foraged along the way, even a dog sometimes chews grass and berries, but the goal was always meat. Agriculture lead to increased production of enzymes for digesting starch. Or lactose in some people with dairy animals being domesticated. But even with hunter-gatherers there are some who have higher rates of genes for digesting starch. Hazelnuts were eaten in huge amounts in Europe before agriculture. Modern hunter-gatherers say honey is their favorite food and they like it more than meat.

And acting like finding it enjoyable to drink it means it's worse than eating a stick of butter which is less enjoyable. That logic only really applies to ultraprocessed food where it might taste good and cause you to crave eating a lot of it, but it's not very nutritious and is bad for you. The same doesn't really apply to minimally processed food.
> As for our pets, It's funny the only animals that have chronic metabolic issues the same way humans do are the ones we keep in our homes and feed the same things we eat Well part of that problem is feeding dry food. Most people don't have any issues eating fresh fruit but if you have them eat only dry fruit they'll end up consuming a lot more than they would otherwise. Feeding dogs only wet food would likely improve health generally, and the same is true for cats too. Of course there are still other problems with food quality but that's probably the biggest one.
