And turns out I am not alone in this. When I was learning Russian I found out that the shorter variations of a word are informal meanwhile the longer variations are formal
( shorter words carry less respect than the longer version of that word )

He/she uses verbs such as "to loose friends" and currency amounts such as "100$".
I correct anyone each time I find these mistakes and he/she takes it in good humour.
I get annoyed when I see people schplunk their choice of words. And it's not a good look when you want to sound knowledgeable or smart, either.

I don't find this annoying with other people per se. In fact, it's a good coarse way to discern worthwhile reading from not when online. What annoys me is that because everyone else is so lax with their writing, mine appears grotesquely formal in messaging scenarios. I cannot bring myself to type that way, it's just not me.
