Actual problems with linux

[lounge] Anonymous @ 2025-09-20 15:16:41 [#495] [104 replies]

[report]

I've been daily driving linux for years now and here are the things i can think of:
- awful software distribution, especially for proprietary
- corpo tranimals running every project, making it subject to die overnight out of nowhere(just like the devs)
- insane defaults everywhere, often not following any standards at all
- the "customization" that's often advertised is massively exaggerated, instead of having 100 different choices for each part of the system, realistically you get like 2-5 at most with even less being of high quality, which is even debatable

I wonder if those things could be fixed without just sitting down and writing mountains of code alone

yeah i fucking hate linux sometimes, i'm dualbooting win10 and alpine linux and i can't fucking figure out why i need all of these retarded dependencies

>oh yeah this filemanager that has nonfunctional features for no reason is gonna use qt
>but if i want some other functional features while the ones that worked in the other ones are broken i'm gonna have this gtk one
>but you also gotta download these "optional" dependencies in order for it to work
>but they won't work anyway if you download it
>you might need to do some config autism but there is no documentation on it since this program has existed for 15 years
>just werks on my machine bro shut the fuck up!!!!

with linux you can either have

>microcock tier corruption, bloat and performance
>you dont truly control your computer and it's painfully obvious
^ ubuntu, debian.. redhat..
or
>undocumented shit that has a 10% chance of working on your computer
>atleast your computer only uses 500 megs of ram at idle with nothing open with your minimalist WM and background services
>even though winXP only needed 50 megs for a full system but don't worry about that
^ alpine.. (arch, gentoo) tiny core... puppy... etc

damn

The fundamental problem with Linux distros for general desktop usage is the entire core idea of decentralizing software distribution by having several highly centralized distributors instead.

Troons are essential to the OSS ecosystem.

They are kind of like cockroaches in that they're disgusting and everyone hates them but they are helpful at the end of the day.

If trannies didn't shit out their garbageware and stir drama every day we would have stagnation.

This is bad because zoomers(currently young adults) need a constant supply of new things to think about to stay engaged.

There have been many before you who tried to fix it.
All of them failed, either rage quit or bent the knee to the troons in hopes of coding their way out of the grim bottomless pit one day.
The task is plainly Sisyphean and you're better off just raping windows xp/7 into being viable because that's actually possible to accomplish.
But it's all pointless... There is no light at the end of the tunnel. One day good desktop experience will require amounts of tinkertrannying so unfathomably large, you will be better off not using a computer at all.

i think the biggest problem with Linux is that developers aren't compensated in any way so they either work for free (cucks) or they resort to being a bunch of LGBTQIA+PEDO+ZOO++ grifters for donations.
imagine if they could actually apply for some kind of benefits from the government if their software is popular.

Open source developers should stop catering to memes and schizos and have telemetry in their programs so they don't essentially work blind on a project.

99% of people don't care that someone else knows that they run $SOFTWARE_VERSION on $DISTRO with $SOFTWARE_SETTINGS or a stack trace after a crash.

Ideally there would be a universal telemetry protocol made that streamlines the whole process. The client gathers all the telemetry data from the programs and sends it all out when the computer is idle or in light use, so that nobody has to deal with performance issues because of it. This way anyone would be able to host a universal telemetry server for anyone to use, I imagine the Linux Foundation and a bunch of individuals would be willing to provide the developers with free hosting.

Of course you can still be a heckin' privacymaxxing hackerman and disable it.
jane · 2025-09-24 10:05 [#573] [report]
linux users need to stop hating on proprietary so much i think...
It may have been a problem a long time ago but with the amount of libre tools, docs and knowledge that allow you to create any software you want it's no more. These days if the standard proprietary program is flawed you can just make an alternative one.
Also, malicious instructions hiding in the binaries are not a problem since sandboxxing exists - which should be the default everywhere by the way, and the fact that most open source software is not thoroughly verified whether its malicious unless it's security critical or under suspicion
Anonymous · 2025-09-24 10:41 [#574] [report]
>These days if the standard proprietary program is flawed you can just make an alternative one.

You should definitely take a look at all of the open source Discord clones that people have tried to make solely because they're just too afraid of going back to using IRC, Mumble, and XMPP clients (Discord eats more memory than all 3 of the top clients altogether!)

>awful software distribution, especially for proprietary
The majority, if not the entirety of modern Linux relies on the Internet to work.

Modern Linux distros aren't casually giving/selling software repositories in offline DVD/USBs anymore. It's up to the user now if they want an offline Linux..

Everything is reliant on the repositories. If they cannot be access for ANY reason, you're fucked if you need to do anything in relation to packages.

Portable software on Linux also has its own problems. While on Windows we can just shove .exes into a folder of our choice and run a minimalist Windows with maybe a USB containing our toolkit, this is an extremely difficult practice to pull off on Linux, especially if you:

Use a distro that is not mainstream
Want to use software that might be slightly newer or older than your distro
Want prioritize minimal use of system resources

Linux desktop is not a serious endeavor and that's displayed by how despite those foundational issues listed above being well known, no one has attempted to address them, instead OSS programmers just throw more stuff on top of the horrible base.

I have also been thinking about this and I have decided that the only way to make Linux desktop work is to redesign and rewrite major parts of the system but doing that would also make it incompatible with existing Linux distributions.

Although in the end it may be a useless effort anyway! After all, how many users could it possibly gain? First of all they would have to be dissatisfied with both Linux and Windows, which I feel is already quite a requirement because on the surface it appears that the definitive majority of non-normie users are fine with either one.

> name one reason why win 10 telemetry is bad

Telemetry carries a risk of creating dangerous precedents. Nothing is ever done in big batches, but in small compromises which snowball over time.

People generally wouldn’t give a stranger their house/car keys, and they’d most definitely find it incredibly uncomfortable to have their entire city know about their fetishes.

Yet, they’d readily share valuable information with data brokers, because they've grown numb due to convenience and manipulative practices. Never forget that we're at the epitome of information warfare.

You’re free to prioritize your own desired level of convenience. That’s the key element of a fulfilling life, after all. Never forget that consequences are inevitable and our current lifestyles are increasingly unsustainable, and signs of a descent into a new age of fascism are unmistakable.

This is much deeper than "having something to hide". This is often a tactic used to control the narrative, as it is meant to simplify and desensitize something to make it mono-dimensional.

This has evolved in a slightly longer post, but I'm writing it with the best intentions in mind.

Close your eyes, clear your mind, detach yourself from the equation and try to imagine the situation from a higher point in your life. Make this a habit.

trannies are a cancer. They're a bunch of self-absorbed, mentally ill freaks who think the world revolves around their delusions of gender identity. Newsflash: it doesn't.

First off, they're always whining about inclusivity and diversity, trying to force their perverted ideology down our throats. While dismissing anyone they don't like as literally hitler(You deserve to be murdered in front of your entire family, teehee). They demand special treatment, like gender-neutral pronouns, as if that's anyone's problem. It's a distraction from actual coding and progress. And on top of that, it has been proven time and time again that if you give them this one inch, they ALWAYS take a mile(hijack the project) with 100% success rate.

Second, most troons are complete retards when it comes to tech. They can't even write a hello world to save their pathetic lives. But they have the audacity to contribute to projects, often with half-baked, poorly thought-out ideas that slow down development. It's like letting a toddler play with sharp objects.

Third, their fragile egos can't handle criticism. If you dare point out flaws in their code or suggest improvements, they'll cry muh transphobia and try to get you banned from projects. They're toxic as hell and poison the community with their bullshit drama and hypersensitivity.

Fourth, they often have a superior attitude, acting as if their """"struggle"""" gives them some moral high ground. In reality, they're just attention-seekers and narcissists.

But I'm preaching to the choir here anyway, as anyone who actually had to go through the torment that is working with those demented faggots knows this well, and if you think it's not THAT bad then you're either an obtuse double-digit-IQ ape (possibly a tranny in denial yourself) or you're just plain trolling.

For any troons reading this: please present us with a project that got troonified(trans. became """inclusive""") and then got objectively better rather than much, much worse. (please note the emphasis on objectivity)

>the "customization" that's often advertised is massively exaggerated, instead of having 100 different choices for each part of the system, realistically you get like 2-5 at most with even less being of high quality, which is even debatable
Who is advertising this.. I can change any part of my system at will? I don't like my i3 wm bar at the top of the screen? I can change it to anything even program my own and use that instead.. make it however I want to look

Your thread as a whole: I've used ubuntu for years , I don't know what I'm doing , I can't make anything of my own , I love my propriety software , i was better calling home on microsoft

>its a server os
>alpine works fine on my laptop

Any distro can be used as a server.. most server distros can be used normally , Think to yourself what the fuck is a server distro and what makes it different. I can install arch with no display manager , no wm or de and run the server simply based on terminal and it'll make a far cleaner and efficient server versus any " server distro "

Alpine is just Arch with muslc, a better init/configuration system, and a release model that doesn't require constant maintenance.

Linux is bad because:
1)The kernel is bad (composed of 40% firmware binaries)
2)The kernel is bad (the devteam nearly never throws away old code)
3)The kernel is bad (inconsistent code quality, style(7) is hardly ever applied)
4)The kernel is bad (takes hours of waiting to just git clone and build a tiny executable)
5)The kernel is bad (constant CVES remediated by OpenBSD plagarism)
6)The kernel is bad(linus known for accepting obfuscated code)
7)The kernel is bad(linus accepts non-free drivers)
8)The kernel is bad(initially a sys-V UNIX freeware clone, now has no identity/goal)
9)The kernel is bad(500 syscalls are VERY excessive for a system with file-heavy I/O)
10)The kernel is bad(support for awful architectures like x86 and POWERPC)
11)The kernel is bad(grows massively, even Linus claimed it was 'bloated' in c.2005)
12)The kernel is bad(dynamically loads modules instead of text-based configuration)
13)The kernel is bad(The allocator often overcommits and has NUMA locality issues)
14)The kernel is bad(The scheduler is unpredictable, over-configurable heuristic soup)
15)The kernel is bad (Poorly-implemented concurrency)
16)The kernel is bad(Supports inexcusably terrible hardware like modern GPUs & NVMe)
17)The kernel is bad(Has Rust, a lang with poor backwards compatibility & performance)

...This isnt even to speak of DEs, GNU, Poetteringware, xwindows, sys-V init, XDG-complaince, balkanisation, awful package naming and so on and so forth

>actual problems with linux
the learning curve + using distros other than debian (and close derivatives)
that's it.
i enjoy my lightning fast and stable gtk2 only desktop.
of course if you are still in your gaming, java+wasm enabled bloated corporate browser, shiny new software phase than you have much to learn.
i would stop playing with electric toys before id, age verification comes around if i were you, at least just one computer you have should be tor only, lightweight, encrypted, anonymous, etc.
i enjoy making things work on linux more than watching 5 minute ads on jewtube and having microdicks advertisement telemetry 8gb spyware idle with ai screenshotting my desktop.
user-friendly distros are a meme, bleeding edge/rolling muh updoots is a meme.
i understand the corporate defective design of modern linux, you can go back in some cases 10+ years with debian repos.
if you want an OS recommendation: devuan (its 99% debian)
>t. less than a year of real linux experience

you can only cure distrohopping when your computer is truly yours.

You scratch my back, I scratch yours.png

Linux's big weakness for me that I've seen is that it puts too much power in the hands of too few people. This wasn't so bad a few years ago before every project decided to grow a CoC and slap everyone with it, but in a post-CoC world the entire Linux development hierarchy is very similar to a collection of third world dictators. Each one trying to play showmanship with one another while they play a notoriously tenuous game of "I'm not touching you" with their userbase. Each time unilaterally deciding to remove or change features, much to the unpopular protest of the users, which get responded with "So? I'm not changing it. You won't change it. Stop complaining, or I'll ban you, CoC reasons, this is harassment, etc."

This has also resulted in a culture of favoritism and back-scratching, much like third world dictatorships which operate on favors and bribes. Take this exchange, for example, two developers working on a piece of software made for other developers. The play being to not argue a technical merit but to instead remind the developer about who took his side during the Main-Master Git renaming debacle that happened several years ago. The debacle that resulted in the mass permabanning of hundreds of users from multiple projects and breaking hundreds of projects more.

Illustrating that, again, technical merit takes a backseat to backroom dealings, and politics of projects is about favor collecting over making projects of technical merit. You scratch my CoC and I scratch yours, as it were.

Just use whatever honestly. Debian has been fine by me and currently I use Arch (btw). I think the reason I switched was because I intended to tinker with the system, but nowadays never do.
That being said: I also do not care about online drama at all and neither do I belong in the top 1% of "hackers", so what do I care? I mostly just play games using Steam and dev a little.

most linux issues are just the user being too dumb to read a manual or piece together a solution from posts online. anyway i tried Gentoo recently and never going back

you can literally run any pirated game through steam itself, just press the "add a non-steam game" button then add the installer and enable proton as usual, install, then point the exe to the installed game exe

linux still has no application firewall and is pretty useless compared to even windows xp. yes there is "little snitch" ( https://obdev.at/products/littlesnitch-linux/index.html ) using BTF kernel feature but it still leaks packages. then there is opensnitch but it doesnt allow for useful rules. and probably also leaks traffic that it should block instead.
