Funny, all my childhood dvd's are long gone, but I've still got the 1tb drive I got in 2006 plugged into my current desktop with everything still on it.

can we stop with this bullshit that "hdds last forever" which has tons of data against it?
I honestly believe it's some kind of malicious trolling attempt, I have like an entire pile of dead hard drives, most with barely any use, while all of my dozens of ssds are all still working and in regular use, some are almost 10 years old by now, it's like none of you retards actually ever owned an hard drive.

Gonna sound gay as fuck for this but I have OCD that leads to me pirating stuff only to delete it later out of misplaced guilt. So I've download hundreds of terabytes of content over the years but I kept literally none of it. I don't know why I'm like this, if I were in charge of an actual archival project I'd be fine but the fact it's all just for personal use feels so pointless.

They are churning fucking external bluray/dvd combo writers out of china for fucking dollars to manufacture.

Bluray and DVDs are NEVER going away LMAO. I just bought one from aliexpress for $40 and it burns/reads blurays and DVDs.

Even VLC on windows/linux flatpak comes with decryption automatically. You'll have to set the region of the reader but that's about it.

Anon, unless you're downloading and hoarding absolute garbage that's worth nothing but the space it occupies on your HDD, it's not useless or pointless. Not even for only personal use.

Think like this:
The world is going towards cloud computing and thin client computers. A heavily censored and (((curated))) one. Meaning, everything the average NPC will use is cloud based and nothing else.
Those that have hoarded content, wether it is knowledge from .pdf's or e-books of other formats, movies, tv-series and other contents will be king.
You will see, much of what you then have hoarded over the years won't be available in the official cloud computing world anymore because of cultural marxist rules prohibiting the content.
A people that got stripped of their past, are slaves to the future that got created by others.
The only way to break this downspiral into zogbot slavery is to make people not forget where they came from and who they are.

Look what the chinese under Mao did to their own people.
They killed millions, destroyed old traditional villages, buildings, yes entire city districts and temples. Just to make people forget their own past, traditions and religion.
The success was only partially and not 100%, but they pretty much fucked up the chink population in a way that is hard to imagine for us here in the west.

Do you notice how most (((modern))) buildings are built a way they could be located literally everywhere? California, Tokyo, Berlin, NYC or Madrid.
They already do this to us, but the progressive and slow way. So you don't notice or don't feel too offended by this.

Seen to how they memoryholed archive.org and stripped its database of the coof years, you can see where it's going at.

So keep hoarding movies, tv-series, documentaties, books about history and science, old novels and stories and all stuff that could possibly be memoryholed by (((them))).
I'ts never pointless. You and others will profit from it later on.

Redundancy and backups, my friend. NAS with unraid and backups of my HDDs in cold storage that I periodically check for health every few months or so. With Seer I don't even have to fiddle with torrent sites I just request movies/shows on my TV and they automatically download. I sleep soundly knowing the chance of my collection being lost is near zero. Can you say the same about your physical media which is prone to degradation via disk rot, as well as taking up tons of space?

Anonymous · reply · 2026-07-11 06:47:29

>>22098
Disk rot doesnt happen on bluray and DVD it rarely happens if you dont store them in a swamp or humid attic

A standard room can hold thousands of DVD's.

But then you also have a room with a thousand dvds which is ugly. Unfortunately dvd collections do not have the aura that book collections have. I'm aware that rooms can fit a ton of dvds, I'm just saying it's way nicer to just stick a nas in my closet and not have to have a giant fuckass collection taking up my wall space with shelves.

You save the time involved in doing so
You get a second backup that can be ripped

Theres lots of reasons why people buy physical media.

China makes them by the crateful, literally millions of units. You can buy a basic bitch 6X bluray/DVD reader and writer for like $40 on aliexpress. If you want to buy the one without bluray capability its like $20.

You're sounding almost as delusional as sony. Discs work great. The last for decades for zero cost and are dirt cheap to manufacture. You are never going to convince a population that owning nothing is good.
