The catalog corrals people into their designated containment threads instead of making them move through the paginated index.
Before the catalog, users were dumped back onto the board index after posting, making the site harder to navigate but also forcing people to interact with a common stream.

Using the index makes anons enter threads they otherwise wouldnt while the catalog view only produces more generals and less board cohesion. Low effort generals are being kept on life support because necrobumps fill the catalog with threads nobody is really using, which discourages people from entering random threads and talking earnestly in them.

4chan became a consumer based forum because of the catalog and because of auto updaters.

4chan traditionally was referred to by moot as a "salmon ladder" for selecting the most engaging content. The reward for trolling people or making them laugh or making them clap back was someone in your thread riffing on your content, which would keep you on page 0, which would via the Matthew Effect only attract more posters and more content. And when the thread died everyone who was in it would be flushed back into the general pop, only to try to find the next thing that caught their eye.

Post catalog and post official thread updating extension no one uses 4chan that way anymore. People open up the catalog and jump into things they already engage with. The picture of the modern 4channer is the terminally online schizo camping out in his general thread until the heat death of the universe. It's the furthest thing from what made 4chan great in the first place.

The mods are an accelerant on the problems I talked about. They're anti-novelty, anti-user aggregation of content. They put their fingers on the scale where historically they didn't.
If you make a joke that isn't a joke from the last 15 years and you get banned for your trouble, obviously that doesn't do much for original content either.
Worst of all, the recent introduction of fingerprinting domains and captchas basically destroyed the site. The user base dwindled and the low quality of discussion and censorship remained.

If you want to fix the imageboard you need a critical mass of people adopting an imageboard that makes the modern user's pattern of interaction with the site literally impossible at a mechanical level. Only that will break the current stagnation.

i can 100% see this being true. i was a big catalog user for a long time. that only broke a few months ago (long after i stopped using 4chan). lainchan's server had a stroke and the catalog still isn't working properly. it made me to use the index to keep up with stuff.
it's akin to how boomers were funneled into a more homogeneous national culture because they had only a scarce few channels. the index forces you to at least skim over everything that's going on on the board and have a passing familiarity with recent events.
