hello gtards
i bought this for nothing about a year ago, impulsively of course.
atom n455 and 2 gigs of mem (upgraded), also has a ssd (made no speed difference).
running mxlinux 32bit.
is there a better distro? do i just switch it back to win 7 starter? also… any desktop streaming clients that still work on 32 bit? like moonlight?
thanks and yes that is super sonico.

This requires Gentoo with the proper USE flags or Linux from Scratch. AI will help you with that.

Man thats nostalgic. My friend had one of these back in like 2010ish or so. Was totally fucked too because he had so much gay bloatware on it I remember it would just run out of ram and freeze while it was swapping or whatever. I offered to install something lighter like 10 times but I dont think he understood what I was talking about or trusted me. Ended up throwing it out i think. I wouldn't recommend windows 7 I would go debian or arch or gentoo and do a minimalist install where you don't install bloated stuff. I used a thinkpad with like 2gb memory and I did it this way, system idle was like 220mb or something was pretty usable if you were hellbent on running it

I have an atom netbook of similar vintage and specs. Debian stable worked okay on it, you just need to install precisely the packages you need and disable shit bloat services you don't need
btw, you should run amd64 linux instead of i686/32bit, I noticed that the 64bit versions of software actually run a bit faster. not very much faster, but, anything you can get is worth it on a system this slow.

I had one of these, one by Asus or Acer and they called it a Netbook? I remember installing Debian in it, since they had builds for i386, and some wm later, probably awesomewm. Didn't make the machine good or snappy or anything like that but it was fast enough to be usable

Turn it into a headless server. Put pihole, a DoH forwarder, and any other services you could want. 2GB is more than enough for a small server that will run silently for years for you. If you can, limit the battery from charging above 80% and you have a built in UPS that won't inflate as quickly.

You can install puppy or antix and that thing will still chug because a single tab in Firefox already consumes 2 jiggabytes

i would assume he takes the laptop, drops ovpn or something on it and then connects it to a network. complicated stuff, i know.

a lot of us enjoy using what already exists (where possible) rather than just "well, fuck the Earth". I don't shit on people who do, it's mire that I actually like squeezing use out of things like this. The caveat is if they're too power hungry (old Xeon workstations, etc, with the exception that old servers can be great build machines, especially with a web power controller). You do you.

i literally stated one of many acceptable answers. you could alsoiI guess turn a linux deployment into a vpn server by fucking with the routing setup but why in the ever living fuck would you do that when you can just install ovpn or wireguard or tailscale or what the fuck ever. you're literally just asking "how do I shot vpn?"

He probably just installs VPN server software and forwards the port to the laptop from the gateway device. Pretty easy shit to do.
